TOPIC: Politics and Mental Health
Anyone can see that something has changed in our experiences and practices of politics. Life or death has been created, me against your all-or-nothing attitude and perspective of political orientation. The question is, “Is this attitude healthy?” Is it healthy to make horrible statements about friends, family, and other Americans? As a therapist, I have had clients tell me, ‘I ended my friendship with my childhood friend because of whom they voted for,” or family members who stated, “I have disowned my son, daughter, wife, mother, or husband because of their political orientation.” What does this mean? Well, it does appear that some emotional processes or over-emotional dynamics view, perceive, analyze, and understand from a purely emotional point of view. Is it reasonable? Justified or good judgment or common sense to destroy family relationships? Meaningful relationships? Exhibit hate for someone because they believe differently than you do? You’re the only one who can answer this. But consider time goes very fast, life short, and at the end of it all, if you find out this was a poor decision, you will have no time left to correct it.
